I primarily create functional, utilitarian work. It’s important to me that the pieces I make have a purpose and provide a service that enhances a persons’ life, either in serving a meal or decorating a space.
I choose clay because of its connection to the Earth and its malleable properties, allowing any shape imaginable. I enjoy exploring the vast array of possibilities with this medium, form, firing technique, and surface treatment.
I prefer an organic process that shows the “hand” that created the piece, showing the connection to the artist; throwing and tool marks, glaze drips, finger marks, and the inevitable surprises that occur in the process.
When I work with clay, I am reminded that we, clay and I, are composed of the same elements of the universe.
