Since retiring, I have more time to immerse myself in my passion of working with clay. I enjoy learning new techniques and exploring my creativity. I look for new challenges when thinking about what I want to make, either in the form or surface treatment of the piece. I especially enjoy low temperature atmospheric firings since the outcome is unpredictable and the flames and smoke create a one of a kind work of art.
Working with clay is so malleable and the clay becomes the shape I envision. I begin each piece by throwing with intent, planning from the start so the piece ends as I want it to. But it is the surprises that keep me wanting more. I am filled with a sense of pride in making functional work; my bowls, mugs and butter keepers are pieces of art that easily fit into everyday lives. I want people to feel my enthusiasm and sense of accomplishment when they see the completed product.
